Manfred Mann's Earth Band

South African-born Manfred Mann had a series of pop hits in the UK during the 60s. After a brief spell in the jazz-oriented Chapter Three (with Mike Hugg), Mann formed his progressive rock outfit, the Earth Band.

Moody Blues, The

The Moody Blues had rather humble R&B beginnings before discovering the Mellotron and making the switch to art rock. Although they became the first widely accepted progressive band, only their lyrics transcended their pop origins. Massively successful, after releasing seven albums in five years, the Blues took a needed break, only to return to even greater success in the early 80s.

Move, The

Hailing from Birmingham, The Move scored many hit singles during the psychedelic era, but unfortunately their albums, split between the rock-n-roll of Roy Wood and the classical inspirations of Jeff Lynne didn't chart. Drummer Bev Bevan was also an original member, along with vocalist Carl Wayne, bassist Ace Kefford, guitarist Trevor Burton and Wood.

One of the 60s most underrated bands. From their badder than bad, raucous R&B early in their career, the band shifted gears in the underground, first with freakbeat then psychedelia. Their tenure at Abby Road, recording with Norman Smith, ranks as some of the greatest music created in Britain in the 60s. Yes, it really is that good.

Formed by ex-Rattles members, Randy Pie skirted the progressive with easy going jazz-funk, typical of the mid-70s.

Reichel, Achim

One of Germany's most legendary musicians, Achim Reichel's career started in 1960 with The Rattles, one of the countries first beat-era bands. The 70s saw him delve into the progressive music scene, first as A.R. & Machines, and then later as a record producer. Reichel's long and successful career as a solo artist started in 1976 with an album of seafaring songs, appropriately enough for the Hamburg native.

RIP, Ray Thomas of The Moody Blues

Just the other day I was playing a compilation called Early Blues on Compleat Records. Love those early recordings of The Moody Blues, and of course, where would we all be without Days of Future Passed...
