Synths, Sax & Situationists by Ian Thompson

Synths, Sax & Situationists by Ian Thompson is a new book in English that covers the French Underground scene from the late 60s into the late 70s. All the usual suspects are covered, including Gong, Heldon, Ame Son, Magma, Etron Fou Leloublan, etc. Thompson's book provides an enlightened and well-researched narrative to one of the more interesting scenes of the progressive era and comes highly recommended.

Founded by guitarist Jukka Tolonen and drummer Vesa Aaltonen, and Frank Robson and Mans Groundstroem from Blues Section in 1969, their early albums bear some Colosseum, Traffic or Jethro Tull due to the strong English vocals of Robson, but the addition of vocalist Eero Raittinen in 1972 turned the band towards a more original direction, evidenced on the classic Lambertland. Their final album, Milky Way Moses, saw release in the US on Janus Records.

The Lamb Lies Down On Broadway Deluxe Reissue

If I had to pick one singe (double) album that sums up British progressive rock, more than likely it would be Genesis' 1974 epic journey, musical and otherwise, of Rael. For its 50th Anniversary, it's treated to new mixes from the original tapes, including stereo and Dolby Atmos. There's two more CDs of a live version from The Shrine Auditorium, Los Angeles in 1975 (with encores), some extras and a big booklet that includes new interviews from all the participating members of the band.
