Artist: Mahavishnu Orchestra With John McLaughlin
Label: Columbia
Catalog#: KC 31067
Format: Vinyl
Country: United States
Released: 1971-8
Strawberry Bricks Entry:
Though fusion could be described as the combination of jazz and rock, it may be more accurate to acknowledge its rise as “when jazz got electric.” Mahavishnu Orchestra was definitely electric, perhaps even manic at times.

The Low Spark Of High Heeled Boys > Traffic

Artist: Traffic
Label: Island Records
Catalog#: ILPS 9180
Format: Vinyl
Country: United States
Released: 1971-12
Strawberry Bricks Entry:
After their triumphant return, Traffic assembled a live unit with two members from Ginger Baker’s Airforce, bassist Ric Grech and percussionist Reebop Kwaku Baah. Drummer Jim Gordon came in to allow Jim Capaldi to concentrate on vocals. Even Dave Mason returned for a few gigs in mid-1971, as documented on the interim live album, Welcome To The Canteen. However, the oddly titled The Low Spark Of High Heeled Boys was another masterpiece for the band.

The Polite Force > Egg

Artist: Egg
Label: Deram
Catalog#: DES 18056
Format: Vinyl
Country: United States
Released: 1971-02
Strawberry Bricks Entry:
Step back a few years to the oddly named Uriel, from which Egg was (sorry) hatched; founded in 1968 by bassist Mont Campbell, guitarist Steve Hillage and Dave Stewart, who reportedly only took up the organ because he was intimidated by Hillage’s superior guitar playing. They eventually recruited Clive Brooks on drums through a Melody Maker advert. Uriel played bluesy psychedelia, self-described as part Cream and part The Nice. The band gigged sporadically around London and recorded one album posthumously, released under the more pleasant moniker, Arzachel.

The Yes Album > Yes

Artist: Yes
Label: Atlantic
Catalog#: SD 8283
Format: Vinyl
Country: United States
Released: 1971-02
Strawberry Bricks Entry:
The Yes Album was that herculean leap that not only helped Yes save their recording contract with Atlantic, but also elevated them towards rock’s elite. With new blood Steve Howe (previously in Bodast) on guitar, Yes spent a few months isolated in the country writing new material, including fantastic arrangements of Paul Simon’s “America” and The Young Rascals’ “It’s Love.” In retrospect, the elements for success had been in place on their previous two albums; but here, Yes elongate their compositions, which gives them room to blossom without ever getting bloated.
