Don't Call Us - We Call You > Guru Guru

Artist: Guru Guru
Label: Atlantic
Catalog#: ATL 50 022
Format: Vinyl
Country: Germany
Released: 1973-11
Strawberry Bricks Entry:
For their fourth record, titled Guru Guru and again released on Brain, Bruno Schaab replaced Uli Trepte on bass. Transitional, the album reflects the move toward further structured arrangements, and away from the free improvisation of their earlier works. It featured the epic "Der Elektrolurch," a track named after Mani Neumeier's amphibian alter ego and a highlight of the band's live performances from here on out. Hans Hartmann then replaced Schaab, and the band signed to Atlantic Records.

Fandangos In Space > Carmen

Artist: Carmen (19)
Label: ABC Records
Catalog#: DSDP 50192
Format: Vinyl
Country: US
Released: 1973
Strawberry Bricks Entry:
Born in Los Angeles, California, David Clark Allen and sister Angela were raised on Spanish music, as their parents operated a club on the Sunset Strip. In the early 70s, the pair met another kindred spirit: dancer Roberto Amaral. With a vision of combining flamenco music with rock, they formed Carmen with former The Gods and Toe Fat drummer Brian Glascock. However, it took moving to London and catching the attention of the glam world for the band to take flight.

Faust IV > Faust

Artist: Faust
Label: Virgin
Catalog#: V 2004
Format: Vinyl
Country: United Kingdom
Released: 1973-09
Strawberry Bricks Entry:
Faust were uniquely German; and, in all likelihood, were the antithesis of the aesthetics of British prog rock. In fact, Faust's raison d'être had more in common with post-modern art than anything remotely romantic; however, their relative success (courtesy of Virgin Records) was tightly tied to the progressive era. Their first two albums for Polydor, both produced by Uwe Nettelbeck, were instant krautrock classics, though not easy listening by any stretch.

Felona & Sorona > Orme, Le

Artist: Le Orme
Label: Charisma
Catalog#: CAS 1072
Format: Vinyl
Country: United Kingdom
Released: 1973-07
Strawberry Bricks Entry:
Le Orme's third album, Felona & Sorona, was a concept album: a sci-fi saga concerning two planets and their eventual destruction. An English-language version of the album, recorded at Charisma boss Tony Stratton-Smith's request, sports a translation by none other than Van der Graaf Generator's Peter Hammill, but still features the same production of Gian Piero Reverberi's original mix. The record combines gentle progressive music with Le Orme's highly original and Italian feel, and it's certainly one of the finest examples of rock progressivo Italiano.

Flying Teapot (Radio Gnome Invisible Part 1) > Gong

Artist: Gong
Label: Virgin
Catalog#: V2002
Format: Vinyl
Country: United Kingdom
Released: 1973-05
Strawberry Bricks Entry:
While 1971 had been a busy year for Gong (recording three albums), the band spent the majority of 1972 touring and then dealing with lineup changes. Drummers came and went, as did almost everyone else—except for Daevid Allen, Gilli Smyth and Didier Malherbe. In late 1972, the band attended a Kevin Ayers gig in France, where they were introduced to guitarist Steve Hillage. Ladbroke Grove's Tim Blake, around during Allen's Banana Moon sessions, was invited first as a soundman, before returning with a synthesizer.

For Girls Who Grow Plump In The Night > Caravan

Artist: Caravan
Label: London Records
Catalog#: XPS 637
Format: Vinyl
Country: United States
Released: 1973-10
Strawberry Bricks Entry:
Violist Geoffrey Richardson jumped aboard Caravan in late 1972, while bassist John G. Perry joined after the Australian tour. They were two significant additions to the band, as both musicians would impart a significant influence on Pye Hastings and Richard Coughlan. The band hired Dave Sinclair for a tour in the spring; but by the time they entered the studio to record their fifth record, For Girls Who Grow Plump In The Night, Sinclair had returned as fulltime keyboardist.

Strawberry Bricks Entry:
Hailing from Japan, Tsutomu Yamashita, better known as Stomu Yamash'ta, was a classically-trained percussionist whose earliest recording featured the works of 20th century composers Hans Werner Henze, Peter Maxwell Davies and Toru Takemitsu. After releasing his first original percussion composition, Red Buddha, Yamash'ta toured Europe with his Red Buddha Theatre Company, which eventually led him to London and Island Records.
