Pudding En Gisteren > Supersister

Artist: Supersister
Label: Polydor
Catalog#: 2925 007
Format: Vinyl
Country: Netherlands
Released: 1972
Strawberry Bricks Entry:
Supersisters' third album, Pudding en Gisteren, yielded a Dutch Top 40 single and again saw release in the UK, this time on Polydor. The single, "Radio" b/w "Dead Dog," evinces Robert Jan Stips's creativity and humor, while the ensuing "Psychopath" offers a nod to Kevin Ayers. Clocking in around the 12-minute mark, "Judy Goes on Holiday" covers a lot of ground, including some serious doo-wop that closes the piece. The title track gets back on course, charting a rousing melody of clavinet and flute, before slinking down to a funkier groove.

Formed in 1968 in the The Hague, Supersister was comprised of Robert Jan Stips (vocals and keyboard), Sacha van Geest (flute), Marco Vrolijk (drums) and the non-bespectacled Ron van Eck (bass). Extensive play from pirate ship Radio Veronica brought the band's first single, "She Was Naked" b/w "Spiral Staircase" to No. 11 on the Dutch charts in May 1970, and helped land a contract with Polydor Records. Their debut album Present From Nancy appeared in the fall.

Strawberry Bricks Entry:
Argent released a live album, Encore, at the end of 1974, which showcased the considerable talents of the original quartet. However, Russ Ballard then would exit for a rewarding career as a songwriter; while the remaining members would draft two guitarists, John Grimaldi and John Verity, as replacements, beginning with their 1975 studio release, Circus. Produced by Zombie alumnus Chris White, the album indeed revolves around the concept of a circus. Mellotrons ablaze, the title track starts the show, revealing a jazzy undertone to Argent's progressive rock.
