Reviews for the Third Edition

Reviews for the third edition of The Strawberry Bricks Guide to Progressive rock (will be updated).

"500 excellent essays that merge album reviews with band histories, and then mash that into an over-arching chronological framework to not only trace the genre’s “rise” and “fall,” but also the vast parameters that it was capable of embracing." - Dave Thompson, Goldmine Magazine

Charles Snider featured in Prog Magazine #109

Charles Snider is featured this month in Prog Magazine's My Record Collection!
"The mastermind behind a unique reference guide gets his favourite albums out and tell us how an American kid covered a world of progressive music and wrote it up for all to enjoy. Strawberry Bricks forever..."

RIP Florian Schneider

Florian Schneider of Kraftwerk passed away today after a short battle with cancer. There's no underestimating the importance of Kraftwerk's impact on modern music. They were pioneers, innovators, true originals, legends. I'll never forget hearing Autobahn on AM radio as a teenager in 1975. It was most American's introduction to music from Germany. For the band, it was a beginning, and over the next few years they would continue to create completely original music. David Bowie's V2-Schneider was in tribute to Florian.

Rich Williams

Richard Allen “Rich” Williams was born in 1950, in Topeka, Kansas.

Martin Barre

Martin Lancelot Barre was born in 1946, in Kings Heath, outside Birmingham.
“I was born in 1946 and when I see photos of post-war Britain, the kids playing amongst the rubble, houses missing, the terrible, terrible mess, it’s not the Britain that I experienced. By the early 50s, you know, most of the rebuilding had been done. The post-war years were obviously very grim with rationing, so by 50s things were getting better for everyone and they didn’t want to talk about the war. People had moved on from it.”

Christian von Grumbkow

Christian von Grumbkow was born in 1946, in the city of Oberhausen, Germany.

Hugh Banton

Hugh Robert Banton was born in 1949, in Yeovil, Somerset, England.
“To me, WWII has always seemed [like] an age before I was born—obviously, it was not, which must be infant perception. Th ere were always war movies on at the cinema; this carried on way into the 1960s, but there was undoubted optimism everywhere from 1950 on, especially once food-rationing finished. I think that drew a line.”

Dave Lawson

David Clive Lawson was born in 1945 in Alton, Hampshire.

Neil Peart, RIP

Total shock. Neil Peart has passed at age 67. From Rolling Stone: "The cause was brain cancer, which he had been quietly battling for three years, according to Elliot Mintz, a spokesperson for the Peart family. A representative for the band confirmed the news to Rolling Stone."

RIP, Neil Ellwood Peart, 1952 - 2020.
